389 individuals left homeless after yesterday’s blaze in City Proper
ILOILO CITY — Barangay Rizal Pala-Pala 2 in the City Proper suffered from a devastating fire that broke out on the morning of Saturday, April 29, 2023, which engulfed 68 households and left them homeless. According to an initial report by the City Social Worker and Development Office (CSWDO), 44 homes were completely gutted, while 24 suffered partial damage, affecting a total of 389 individuals.
Sara Panello, Social Officer 01 of CSWDO, stated in an interview with Radyo Bistado that 15 families have evacuated to Rizal Elementary School, and their validation process is still ongoing. Meanwhile, they are expecting more affected families to arrive at the evacuation center until Sunday, April 30, 2023.
The CSWDO has prepared hot meals and established a community kitchen for the evacuees. Each family has also received a sack of rice, canned goods, a mat, blanket, and a folding bed. Panello also added that the affected families of totally gutted homes will receive financial assistance of Php 10,000, while those with partially damaged houses will receive Php 5,000.
In addition, local businesses have extended their support by providing aid, such as food and water, to the affected families.
Despite the challenges faced by Panello and her team, they remain committed to providing the necessary services to make the affected families comfortable during this difficult time.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and an investigation is underway. In the meantime, the City Proper community is coming together to assist those affected by the disaster.
