Elderly woman loses life in road accident in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo

ILOILO CITY – A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 60-year-old woman in Barangay Bolong Oeste, Sta. Barbara, Iloilo on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at around 6:47 pm.

According to Police Corporal Mark Puga, investigator of the Sta. Barbara Municipal Police Station in an interview with Radyo Bistado, the driver of the pick-up truck who hit the victim was identified as Nikhel Nowlakha, 18 years old and a resident of Barangay Ayaman, Cabatuan. Nowlakha was reportedly heading back to his hometown of Cabatuan from the city of Iloilo when the accident occurred. Just before the accident, the victim, Marilou Soplido, was crossing the street to return home when she was hit by the truck. The impact caused her to hit the windshield and land on top of the pick-up.

After the accident, Nowlakha did not attempt to flee and immediately surrendered to the police.

Puga stated that the family of Soplido has decided to pursue the case and the Sta. Barbara MPS is set to file charges of Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide against Nowlakha on the following day.

Currently, Nowlakha is under the custody of the Sta. Barbara MPS for proper disposition of his case.
