ILOILO CITY, PHILIPPINES – A fire broke out in the Santa Rosa neighborhood of Mandurriao, Iloilo City, resulting in the tragic death of a 72-year-old woman who was trapped inside her home.

Marianito Fernandez Jr, the victim’s younger sister, recounted in an interview with Radyo Bistado that the fire started around 6:30 PM and that her older sister Leah Fernandez was left behind and unable to escape.

Leah, who was bedridden and unable to move quickly, remained in the house as the flames grew. Marianito was not home at the time but returned when she saw smoke emanating from their house.

She attempted to enter the house to rescue her sister, but the intense heat and flames prevented her from doing so.

Leah’s remains were found in the back of the house after firefighters arrived at the scene.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, authorities suspect it may have been due to an electrical problem.
