Fatal collision in Barotac Nuevo claims one life and leaves another critically injured
ILOILO CITY – One person has been confirmed dead and another is in critical condition after a fatal collision between a motorcycle and a truck in Barangay Liko-an, Barotac Nuevo on Tuesday, February 21, 2023.
The motorcycle was being driven by Jilbert Serenio, 34 years old, with his younger brother Jessie Serenio, 31 years old, as his passenger.
The pair collided with a truck being driven by Benjamin Demandante, 40 years old, a resident of Ferraris, Sara, on the same road.
According to Police Staff Sergeant Renebe Blanco, the traffic investigator at the Barotac Nuevo Municipal Police Station, the truck and motorcycle were traveling in opposite directions when the incident occurred.
Initial investigations revealed that the truck and the motorcycle were on the same lane when the motorcycle suddenly swerved and collided with the truck. Demandante claimed that the motorcycle was traveling at a high speed and that he had little time to react to avoid the collision.
The impact of the crash resulted in both motorcycle passengers sustaining serious injuries. Jelbett was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while Jessie remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment.
Demandante has expressed his willingness to provide financial assistance for the family’s expenses for the funeral and medical bills. He is currently in custody at the Barotac Nuevo Municipal Police Station, awaiting the family’s decision on what action to take against him.
The incident serves as a grim reminder for drivers and commuters to exercise caution and observe proper road safety protocols to avoid such accidents.
